Nether Wallop Mill

Nether Wallop MillThe Mill, in the pretty thatched village of Nether Wallop in Hampshire has been the home of Fishing Breaks for over ten years. Nestling at the head of the Test valley, beside the burbling Wallop Brook and with a gin-clear lake full of eager trout this is the perfect place to try your hand at fly fishing.

Every day is hosted by myself or one of my experienced instructors who have worked at Nether Wallop Mill, rain and shine, for many seasons. We are all knowledgeable and patient tutors with a great sense of humour. We know that learning to fly fish is more than just perfecting your casting; it is about catching fish, having fun and enjoying everything that makes for the perfect day beside a river.

We will of course take you from the basics to whatever level you want to achieve and will adapt to suit your needs on the day. The tuition will always be very practical, where the aim is to have you rod in hand and fishing with confidence in the shortest time possible.

The Mill is set up solely for private tuition and small groups. For the fishing we have a well stocked trout lake, for the casting the Mill pond and for advanced techniques there is a section of the Wallop Brook with some canny wild brown trout. The facilities are first class; easy car parking, a thatched oak fishing cabin with a veranda that overlooks the lake, a lounge, kitchenette and lavatory. All the tackle is provided and we even have every size of Wellington boot if you need to borrow a pair!

Nether Wallop is easy to reach, just over an hour from the M25. The local market town of Stockbridge (4 miles) is a good place to stay or visit, with a host of local shops, places to eat, four pubs to stay at and one hotel. It is also the ‘fly fishing capital’ of England with a famous fishing history, two fishing shops and the River Test flowing alongside the High Street.

Sea Bass Fly Fishing

Sea Bass Fly Fishing

Sea fish on the fly are a great adventure combining a wonderful day on the water along the Dorset coast whilst fishing for hard fighting (and good eating!) sea bass, bream and mackerel.

Our fishing guide Tony King, has adapted his boat based in Weymouth Harbour, for saltwater fly fishing. The shores and coves around Weymouth, with the low tidal ranges and predominately south westerly winds make this a great location for a fly fishing day.

Typically Tony will leave the harbour around 7am-8am in the morning, depending on tides. Then it will be a thirty minute ride to the first mark of the day whilst Tony familiarises you with the saltwater tackle and explains the plan for the day. All the tackle and flies are provided.

The ‘marks’ will be drop offs close to harbour walls, break waters, gravel spits or undersea structure. You will fish from either the boat, or on occasions, wade the shallow flats. Bring your chest waders. For lunch the boat will moor up beside one of the fishing shacks on the amazing Chesil Beach, an 18 mile bank of shingle and the only one of its kind in the world. Whilst Tony barbeques the catch for lunch you will have the chance to explore a beach that shifts beneath your feet.

After lunch the fishing will follow a similar pattern, returning to Weymouth in the late afternoon. Tony’s boat is moored in the marina with all day car parking within five minutes walk. Weymouth is a thriving fishing port and sailing marina with a bustling sea front with shops, pubs and seafood restaurants.

Rocky coastline day

In this introduction to fishing along a rocky coastline you will fish in varying depths of water and be shown how to identify potential fish holding areas and features.

You will use different line densities and learn a variety of casting skills to cope with the wind, lines and weighty flies. You will need chest waders and to be physically fit. We will be targeting bass, mullet and pollock on these days.

For travelling overseas the skills will be ideal for striped bass, trevally, kingfish, bluefish, taylor, rooster fish and elf.

Flats days

Fishing along sandy flats, of a comfortable wading depth, where fish spotting techniques, stealth and fast response are essential. Learn how to rapidly deploy your line and cope with adverse conditions. Develop line management and depth judgement skills. Chest waders are needed. We will be generally targeting sea bass and mullet on these days.

The techniques will stand you in good stead for any trip to the Caribbean, Kiribati or Seychelles fishing for barracuda, bonefish, grand trevally, permit or tarpon.
